The premier destination for Horseback Riding Lessons in Sonoma and Santa Rosa.
At Pegasus, we provide accessibility to equestrian activities for populations at risk. Started in 2000, we have combined natural horsemanship with environmental education and EFT (equine facilitated therapy) to create a style that is inclusive to all people. Private lessons are the back bone of Pegasus. The student and horse get our total focus, always keeping an eye out for safety. The teaching style at Pegasus is based on the one-on-one class format, thereby tailoring the lesson to each student.
The program can accommodate beginners as young as 4 years old with proper supervision and extra safety measures. We are also ready to teach adults of all ages. Each lesson starts from the ground up, with learning how to walk a horse, as well as groom and handle them from the ground (small kids get a lot of support and can do this part too). Horse husbandry an care are explained and demonstrated where possible. For example, after a ride on a hot day, the student will help shower the horse and learn about the care a horse requires for health and well being. Because each lesson is private we can adjust the activities and lessons to the student; for example a young child will be introduced to the general horse vocabulary, such as, stirrups, saddle and girth. Whereas an older more advanced student will learn about colic in horses, how to treat it and how to prevent it. Other topics we cover include: equine diet, 1st aid for horses, the needs of an older horse, equine massage, equine dental needs, parasite control in horses, hoof care needs, equine veterinary care and many others.
After helping tack up the horse the student gets to ride. The gentle horses make for an easy connection to the natural world. At Pegasus we choose not to ride with a bit in the horse’s mouth. We use bitless bridles; it is safe and effective. The horses get regular hoof care, equine dental care and equine massage to keep them healthy and happy. In addition, they also receive dietary supplements and specialized extra feed from grains and oats. We have witnessed the way every horse has its own unique lesson to share.
